IWD 2026: French Embassy Launches Art X Impact Campaign to Advance Gender Equality in Nigeria
The French Embassy in Nigeria has unveiled the Art X Impact Campaign in commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, reaffirming its commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment nationwide.
The event, held at the Alliance Française in Ikoyi, Lagos, attracted a diverse audience, including representatives of government institutions, the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations, private sector stakeholders, industry leaders, and members of the cultural community.
French Consul General Laurent Favier, in his remarks, welcomed attendees with a blend of warmth and humour, setting the tone for an evening that combined elements of diplomacy, art, culture, and advocacy.

The Embassy explained that the Art X Impact Campaign is a multidisciplinary artistic initiative aimed at amplifying messages on women’s rights and gender equality across 16 states in Nigeria.
The project brings together local artists, civil society organisations, and influential voices to produce a range of creative works, including paintings, music, sculptures, murals, and dance performances.
As part of the campaign, exhibitions showcasing compelling stories and images of women who have benefited from empowerment programmes will be displayed across the ten French Alliance centres in Nigeria, encouraging broader public engagement in conversations around gender equality.
The initiative builds on the successes of the French Embassy Fund for Civil Society Organisations (FEF-OSC), a flagship programme that supports efforts in economic empowerment, climate adaptation, peacebuilding, and the fight against gender-based violence.
Implemented in partnership with Nigerian civil society organisations and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the fund has supported 21 projects across 16 states, demonstrating what Embassy officials described as the impact of community-driven solutions.
Speaking at the event, Favier emphasised that gender equality remains a central pillar of France’s foreign policy, noting that the initiative aligns with the country’s broader feminist diplomacy agenda.
“It is a great privilege to address you this evening on the occasion of International Women’s Day. This global observance reminds us of our shared responsibility to advocate for the rights of all women and girls,” he said.
Favier stressed that gender equality goes beyond being a moral imperative.
“Gender equality is not only an objective in itself; it is essential for reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening effective governance,” he added.
He further highlighted the strategic partnership between France and Nigeria, noting that the civil society fund represents more than a development initiative.
“This gathering goes beyond a review of projects. It reflects our shared ambitions between France and Nigeria. The fund conveys a clear political message about the kind of partnership we seek—one rooted in trust, mutual learning, and co-creation,” he stated.
Favier added that the programme was designed in response to priorities identified by Nigerian civil society organisations.
“We see our role as facilitators, committed to supporting local leadership and expertise. The solutions must be rights-based, community-driven, and designed by Nigerians for Nigerians,” he said.
He noted that sustained financial support for local innovation, in collaboration with key institutions, has already begun to yield tangible results.

“By backing 21 initiatives in 16 different states, we have witnessed remarkable variety and skill in practice. Investing in gender equality and economic empowerment is not an act of charity — the benefits of empowerment are experienced by everyone, creating positive impacts that begin within families and extend to communities and markets,” he explained.
He called on participants from various sectors to engage actively in advancing progress.
“Consider how you might contribute your skills, enhance visibility, provide access to your networks, recruit individuals, train teams, or develop your corporate social responsibility strategies. If you’re unsure of where to begin, the French Embassy is prepared to facilitate connections,” Favier noted.
